Parent Outrage at Palo Alto High School

We had an interesting discussion in class yesterday about the rights of students and how, when schools know about cases of sexual assault between students, it can be difficult to go about addressing the crimes to parents and the public. Recent controversy has erupted over a sexual assault case at Palo Alto High School. A student was recently found delinquent of one count of sexual assault after initiating sex with a non-consenting victim in a local church. The same student has been accused of two other sexual assaults by two different women. Since he is a minor, The school has refused to release his name. This has sent parents into an outrage. I know that as a student  I would feel completely unsafe knowing that there was a student walking around who has been found guilty of sexual assault. At the same time, is it fair to ask the school to infringe on his right to privacy in order to make me feel safe? What do you guys think?

  1. Unfortunately, this is a tough issue. Schools hands are tied because, if the student is a minor, legally they are not allowed to release that information.
