Trump was elected because people were unhappy with the current state of affairs. This might be because they wanted him to clear out corruption or because they supported his racist, sexist, and bigoted views. Either way, this is eerily similar to the platforms Hitler and Mussolini ran on, as was pointed out by several different people. He championed the banner of "America first!", an extremely anti-semitic phrase. He was even supported by the KKK. However, although all of this was concerning, it had yet to be actual action toward a fascist government.
Things only went downhill once Trump was inaugurated, though. It started with Trump's inauguration speech, which was written by white nationalist Steve Bannon and reiterated his "America first" rhetoric. He then instituted a possible gag order on the National Park Service after they tweeted about how small the crowd at his inauguration was. (Which they have proudly been defying, by the way.) Such gag orders might well be against federal law. This is not anywhere near the worst of it. Trump banned immigration from several primarily Muslim countries, allegedly to prevent terrorism. (For a lovely cherry on top, it also seems designed to benefit his businesses.) This ban didn't just prevent potential immigration; it also blocked current green card holders from returning to the U.S. Following this, there were protests at airports across the nation. Luckily, the ACLU, along with others, managed to obtain a temporary stay on the green card immigration ban. However, despite a court ruling, customs officials at Dulles International Airport have continued to hold people.
This situation is a constitutional crisis, when one branch of the government (executive) defies the orders of another (judicial). These circumstances are also eerily similar to how Hitler started stripping Jews of their rights, as well as how he took power away from the Weimar Republic.
We've given Trump his chance, and he started with textbook moves to seize power and create a fascist government. I'd rather not wait for our Reichstag Fire.
