Why I Marched Last Week
Everyone who showed up to march on Saturday January 21, 2017 did so for his or her own personal reasons. I marched to make myself feel better. It was competely selfish. I wanted to be with people that would remind me that America is ultimately good. That optimism is alive. That democracy is still the prevailing sentiment in our United States. That kindness and compassion are still our core values. That strangers are not to be feared. That women's rights are important universally, not just for women, but for everyone. That the government is for the people and by the people, not something that is done TO the people. I marched because I wanted to be a role model for the young women around me who still take so many of their "rights" for granted.
The next day I found this article online and it pretty much summed up my feelings. Powerful stuff.
I'm Sorry. You are not equal.

Amazingly, I don't think I marched primarily for women's rights, although that was definitely a component. I marched to show that even though the electoral college has elected Trump (against the popular vote), we'll still use our voices. We'll speak out and be a pain in the ass to anyone trying to pass legislation large segments of the country don't like.
ReplyDeleteObviously, that encompasses fighting for women's rights, but it also includes so much more for me, like LGBT+ rights, the right to free speech, and disability activism.
Exactly... it was about using your body and your voice to make tangible the will we have to move forward. :-)
