Should we get involved
After yesterdays class i thought a lot about whether or not people should be able to be a bystander and let a crime happen. I think that if you know something is going to happen and you do nothing to stop it then you should be held partially responsible because you are contributing to the event of the crime even though your not the one doing the crime. Bystander are people who infuriate me because they are just watching. There are so many things in life that could be prevented if someone had just stepped in to help and/or prevent that occurrence.

I understand your point, but if everyone who was ever a bystander could be held legally responsible, then pretty much everyone would be guilty of being some type of bystander. But, I do agree that their are some situations where a bystander should have to do something other than just walk away.
ReplyDeleteYou bring up an important issue. I think that it is important to understand, though, that sometimes it is hard to be the one that stands up. In the Kittie Genovese case, the man that saw her getting beat right outside of her door probably was thinking about his own safety against a murderer. We all say that we will stand up for others, but in real life, that is not always the case.
