Ethics v Morals
After watching both documentaries, I think morals and ethics are connected with each other but they may go against each other at times. For example, it is morally correct to always tell the truth, but it might not always be the best decision to tell the truth, which is why ethically it might be better for someone to lie. If it's better for the situation as a whole, the morals are outweighed by the ethics which makes it okay for someone to do something they normally wouldn't do. Therefore, it may be better for times to be immoral if it is better for the entire situation and benefits the others around you.

Homer said that the only people who should be allowed to lie are the rulers of states. In that sense Homer is trying to say what you are saying. If a ruler tells a lie that protects his community, he is justified. However, he doesn't trust others to lie. Do you think that people have the judgement to know when to break moral codes?
ReplyDeleteI think that's somewhat limiting, though. Is it better for a doctor to say, "You can make it," even if the patient only has a three percent chance of long-term recovery. There's the argument that it's better for someone not to know how hopeless a cause is, because that might give them a will to fight they wouldn't have had otherwise. Plus, in that case, it's not really "the community" that's being helped. It's the patient and, perhaps, their family.
